Amy Barkley, Livestock Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) and Jess Waltemyer, NYS Small Ruminant Extension Specialist with Cornell’s PRO-LIVESTOCK Team, are partnering to host a training for sheep, goat, and camelid owners on the importance of integrated pest management techniques for internal parasites. Internal parasites are very common and can be economically damaging without using the proper techniques to reduce exposure, improve animal resiliance, and properly treat current infestations.
Students will learn about integrated pest management practices that are key to reducing internal parasite loads and dewormer resistance in sheep, goats, and camelids. The topics to be covered include:
- Common internal parasites and their lifecycles
- Strategies to reduce the need for antiparasitic drugs
- Developing an effective grazing plan to reduce worm burdens
- Practical, effective ways to use dewormers
Everyone will receive hands-on practice with performing FAMACHA exams and 5-Point Checks©. Students successfully completing this course will receive a FAMACHA card to use on their farm and will receive a certificate of completion.
