New York Forest Owners Association and CCE- Cattaraugus County invite you to join them on Saturday, June 21st for an opportunity to participate in a “very variable woods walk” in the words of long-time owner and host, Dennis Wilson, a retired professional forester (33 years NYSDEC).
You will see a 65-acre managed property featuring a 2 acres old growth forest, primarily hemlock, but also white pine (over 300 years old) and hardwoods. There are ongoing fuelwood harvests in addition to 80 plus year old plantations of larch and white pine; a 4-acre man-made pond; and an Osprey nest with the possibility of observing the parents feeding their young.
There will be at least 2 Master Forest Owner volunteers attending this event that will gladly answer any questions about the program.
Master Forest Owner Volunteers are graduates of volunteer training through the Cornell MFO program. Statewide over 140 volunteers are available to assist woodland owners with information needed to manage their woodlands through free visits and discussions. Learn more about MFO program: https://blogs.cornell.edu/ccemfo/program-information/
Are you interested? An on-site, no-obligation visit is absolutely free! Woodland owners from across the state may contact a Master Forest Owner for information about the program and discuss opportunities for obtaining more satisfaction from one’s woods. At your request, an MFO volunteer will arrange a visit with you at your woodland to get a first-hand look and discuss sources of assistance or information. MFOs are experienced and knowledgeable individuals who can put you in touch with the right people to meet your goals. The MFO can also be instrumental in helping you develop a management plan for your property. If you would like to request a site visit - Cornell Master Forest Owner Volunteer - Visit Request Form
Note that this walk is variable terrain: a level section with unimproved, unmowed trails and a steep section of old growth with little undergrowth. The reasonable fit 78 year old owner can navigate the property…slowly…lol!
The program will be held rain or shine unless a severe weather warning is issued. Please dress for the weather. This event is open to the public and there is no fee.
Registration: 9:00 - 9:30
Directions: From Kennedy, take US 62 East toward Ellington; turn right on Little Road; turn left on Brainard Road. Park on the shoulder near 4384.
