The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning, and Tourism, and Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties will host a seminar for farmers and landowners interested in exploring beekeeping and honey production as a means to diversify and enhance incomes.
The seminar will be held on Wednesday, May 21 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Cattaraugus County Government Building at 303 Court Street in Little Valley. The seminar is free and open to the public but pre-registration is recommended.
The demand for locally produced honey is growing, as is the demand for pollination services for farmers and other producers. Additionally, there is a growing awareness of the challenges faced by bee colonies due to pesticides and climate change.
Experienced beekeeper and honey producer Kale Luce of Cattaraugus will discuss how to enter the field of beekeeping for pollination and honey production, and wholesale and retail marketing of honey. Jean Davis, Cattaraugus County Executive Director of the USDA Farm Service Agency, will be on hand to discuss federal assistance for colony collapse disorder. There will be time devoted to questions and answers as well.
